What is radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas. It is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and chemically inert, unless you test for it. Radon is formed by the natural radioactive decay of Uranium in rock, soil, and water.
Are there any health risks associated with radon?
Yes! The U.S. Surgeon General, EPA, World Health Organization, American Lung Association, National Cancer Institute, and American Medical Association all agree that radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the United States. Radon gas decays into radioactive particles that get trapped in the lung when you breathe. As they break down further, they damage lung tissue, which can lead to lung cancer.
How often is indoor radon a problem?
Iowa ranks #1 in percentage of homes with radon levels over EPA’s action level of 4 pCi/L. EPA studies confirm that 71% of Iowa homes fail initial radon testing. Because most Americans spend as much as 90 percent of their time indoors, exposure to Radon Gas is an important concern.
How does radon gas enter the home?
Most indoor Radon comes into the building from the soil or rock beneath it. Radon gas rises through the soil and gets trapped under the foundation and inside the footings or in the crawlspace. The trapped gases enter the house many ways including cracks or openings in the floor, plumbing penetrations, floor-wall joints, sump openings, and hollow block wall construction.
How to test for radon gases in a home:
When it comes to equipment, we use the best testing monitors available. The Femto-TECH monitor records and provides a printout of the safeguards EPA recommends for real estate transactions. The testing device monitors hourly levels of the radon concentrations and has a motion detector to determine if the device was moved during the test period. The "Femto-TECH" monitor records humidity, temperature, and barometric pressure hourly during the test period to determine if "closed house conditions" were followed. A testing monitor records radon levels in the home for a minimum of 2 days (48 hours).
What to do if radon levels are above the EPA's action level?
If the home's radon level tested at 4pCi/Ls or above, Please Do Not Panic because ALL homes can be mitigated (lowering radon levels below EPA recommended levels), by venting gases from beneath the foundation. A complete list of licensed mitigators (by county) in Iowa may be found on the link above called “EPA’s Guide to Radon”, or by going to www.idph.state.ia.us/eh/radon.asp

If you have any questions or would like to schedule a radon test, please contact us at (319) 396-1469.

When you reduce the radon level in your home, you immediately reduce the risk of lung cancer for every person living in that home.
